When it comes to bladder cancer, early diagnosis and early care is key. Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is cancer of the bladder caught early. NMIBC is cancer that grows only in the thin tissue on the inside surface of the bladder.
Some things that put you at higher risk for bladder cancer include smoking, workplace exposure to chemical used to make plastics, paints, leather and rubber and genetics. To find bladder cancer early, it is of great value to know the symptoms.
Blood in the urine is the most common symptom of bladder cancer, often painless. You may not be able to see blood in your urine without a microscope but if you do, tell your health care team, even if it goes away. Your health care team will be able to run some tests to find out if the blood in your urine is from bladder cancer or something else like an infection or kidney stones. Less common symptoms may include frequent need to pass urine and pain when you pass urine (dysuria). These should also be mentioned to your health care team.
Treatment will depend on how much your cancer has grown, along with your health and age. Your health care team will tell you about your risk for the cancer spreading and the stage and grade of your cancer. Treatment options may include cystoscopy with TURBT, immunotherapy, chemotherapy or cystectomy (bladder removal). By learning more about NMIBC, you may feel more ready to talk with your health care team.
