Peyronie’s Disease, or curved penis, is caused by the way a person’s body heals wounds. Injury or damage to the outer tissues of the penis causes scar-like tissue (plaque) to form. This scarring goes well beyond the normal healing process. Plaques can cause the penis to change shape such as a curve, indent (forming an hourglass shape) or becoming shorter. In some cases, these changes can make it hard, or even impossible, to have sex. Sometimes men may feel pain or find they have erectile dysfunction.
It is of great value to talk to a urologist who specializes in Peyronie’s Disease as soon as any symptoms happen. The sooner you get treatment, the better your result.
Urologists often opt to treat the condition without surgery if it is in the early or active phase. Men with small plaques, not much curvature, no pain and no problems with sex may not need treatment at all. Pain from the plaque is usually treated with anti-inflammatories like NSAIDS. If you need to be treated, you have choices such as penile injections, surgery and oral pills.
Many men who have Peyronie’s Disease say they have symptoms of depression. Talking with a therapist or counselor may help with depression, anxiety and intimacy.
It is always best to talk to your health care team to find the best treatment option and find the support you need. To learn more about Peyronie’s Disease, check out the below resources:
