Fertility refers to the natural ability to reproduce and make offspring. In humans, fertility refers to the ability to conceive and carry a pregnancy to term, which results in the birth of a baby. Fertility is affected by many factors.
In females, fertility is mainly determined by the presence of healthy eggs and the regular release of eggs from the ovaries. Factors that can affect female fertility include age, ovarian function, hormonal balance, reproductive health conditions (such as polycystic ovary syndrome, known as PCOS, or endometriosis), and lifestyle factors.
In males, fertility is mainly based on the healthy sperm being made and the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg. Things that can affect male fertility include sperm count, sperm movement, sperm shape, hormonal balance, reproductive health conditions (such as varicocele or infections) and lifestyle factors.
While some lifestyle factors can affect women more than men and vice versa, many factors affect both. These may include things like diet, weight and exercise, physical and mental stress, exposure to harmful chemicals, alcohol and drug use and abuse, and medications.
Infertility is a growing problem that affects couples trying to conceive. Research points to a link between diet and female fertility. In fact, research shows that a diet high in trans fats, processed foods and added sugars can have a negative effect on one’s fertility. Diets rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, plant-based proteins, and vitamins and minerals have a positive impact on female fertility. To prepare for pregnancy and enhance fertility, it is of great value for females to keep a healthy weight and choose foods that will create a healthy home for a baby. This should include sources of folic acid, iron and other healthy nutrients.
Men also should try to keep a healthy body weight and follow a balanced eating pattern, since male obesity may alter hormone levels. Also, low sperm count and reduced movement of sperm are common in men who are overweight and obese. When it comes to food choices, load up on fruits and vegetables, which have vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that may help create strong sperm.
Avoid going on fad diets, which can deplete your body of nutrients, and find a healthy eating plan that works for you.
