Thirty years ago the official foundation of the American Urological Association was established. Although I didn’t have a leadership role with the Foundation in 1987, I am very proud to have served as the Chair since 2014. Over these years, I have seen tremendous growth and evolution of the Foundation. As a result, nearly $26 million has been raised over the last three years alone through fundraising efforts, grants and collaborations with patients, caregivers, families, healthcare professionals, researchers, physicians, corporate donors, affiliated organizations and the public. The year 2017 marked the end of my time as the Chair.
I am pleased to announce that Harris M. Nagler, MD, FACS has been named President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Dr. Nagler began his two-year term as President on January 1, 2018. “I am honored to continue my commitment to the Foundation and its mission in this new role,” said Dr. Nagler. “Supporting and improving the prevention, detection and treatment of urological conditions and diseases through research and education is part of the fabric of our profession. Continuing to do it here, with an organization of such stature and trustworthiness, remains a privilege.”
Over the last year, Dr. Nagler has helped drive the Foundation’s outreach and development efforts, making great strides in establishing our foundation as the single largest resource for medically approved urologic patient education information and in supporting research funding for many of our young scientists dedicated to preventing, diagnosing and treating urologic conditions and diseases.
Together with Dr. Nagler and the members of the Urology Care Foundation Board of Directors, we are pleased to present to you the Urology Care Foundation’s 2017 Annual Report. This report highlights many of the important ways in which we strive to exceed our mission. It reviews how we support research which enables us to contribute to the cures of tomorrow, and our financials highlight how we pledge to invest in urologic health with world-renowned research and educational programs. Further, this report shows how we empower patients through our commitment to the provision of free physician-led patient education. Our annual report portrays how we care for the public through our advocacy efforts and community awareness as well as how you may find a way to give to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from urologic conditions.
On behalf of the Board, I sincerely thank our staff, volunteers and donors for their faithful trust and support. Because of you, we are able to move our mission forward and better the lives of urologic patients everywhere.
The foundation makes a promise to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of urological diseases.
Richard A. Memo, MD

The Urology Care Foundation is a trusted resource for urologic patient education materials because our information is medically approved and aligns with current clinical guidelines of the American Urological Association. The foundation develops all patient education materials together with our Patient Education Council and six Patient Education Committees.
We have more than 150 patient education materials ranging from simple fact sheets to detailed patient guides to informative videos. All of our educational materials may be downloaded or ordered from our website for free, so our resources are the go-to place for patients and caregivers wanting to learn more about any urologic condition. We strive for all of our materials to be presented at an eighth grade reading level to ensure the information is easy to read and understandable for our many patients, including their families and caregivers.

Welcoming a new baby is both wonderful and stressful. When the baby is born with a difference, the family is confronted with unexpected news, unfamiliar terms and uncertainty about the future. This can be frightening and isolating, particularly if the healthcare team is not well versed in the care of these babies and their families. Parents report increased levels of psychological distress that could affect the well-being of the child, so there is a critical need to provide educational resources for these families. The Urology Care Foundation has a substantial impact for these families by providing easy-to-understand medical information, delivered with compassion, during a time of confusion.”

We genuinely care for the community through advocacy, alliances and awareness.
Legislative Messaging | Strengthened Because We Care
Through patient and research advocacy outreach initiatives, we have strengthened the Urology Care Foundation and the AUA’s legislative messaging on Capitol Hill and among government agencies. In 2017, we provided thousands of patients and caregivers with vital information on clinical trials that offer new opportunities and hope for better outcomes. We also facilitated seven patient advocacy organizations in joining our sign-on letter promoting the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) decision to include a urologist on its review panel.
Shared Decision Making | Caring for Patients and Caregivers
In our prostate cancer suite of materials, we developed shared decision-making tools and videos to assist patients with becoming active participants in their care. In addition, we developed tools for our healthcare providers to ensure they are equipped with the necessary resources needed to develop meaningful relationships with their patients.
Driving Positive Change for Patients | Caring through Collaboration and Education
This year, the Foundation was a featured presenter in a national webinar for patient advocates entitled Driving Positive Change for Patients through Collaboration and Education. HealthyWomen and the National Association for Continence, two of the AUA’s patient advocacy partners, also presented to an audience of more than 75 advocates. The presentations focused on how advocates can drive positive change for patients through collaboration and education.
Bladder HeaLth Month | We Care Enough to Spread the Word
In November 2017, the AUA and the Urology Care Foundation launched its Bladder Health Month awareness campaign. A social media thunderclap was utilized to kick start awareness efforts, where a social reach of 135,248 people was achieved. Additional activities that occurred throughout the month included press releases, webinars hosted by the AUA’s advocacy partners and resources that promote communication between physicians and patients.
Bladder Health Alliance | Organizations Gather to Care
The fourth Annual Bladder Health Alliance Roundtable meeting successfully gathered representatives from more than 25 organizations who represent patients, physicians and the researchers. Presentations on research advocacy, innovative approaches to digital media campaigns and federal initiatives related to bladder health generated innovative ideas about collaborative tactics that aim to remove stigma and raise awareness about conditions impacting bladder health.

I learned more men would have prostate cancer than women would have breast cancer, and that was just startling.”
Mike Haynes
Professional Football Hall of Famer, Prostate Cancer Survivor
The Urology Care Foundation has embraced nearly a decade of collaboration with the National Football League (NFL) in an effort to build public awareness around the risk, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. The Know Your Stats about Prostate Cancer® campaign is a national public awareness effort to connect, educate and inspire men across the country to know their risk and talk to their doctor about whether prostate cancer testing is right for them. We partner with Pro Football Hall of Famer, Mike Haynes, to help us get the word out.
The Know Your Stats season kicked-off in June 2017 with a Media Tour in San Diego and Los Angeles and wrapped up in Minneapolis at Super Bowl 52 in February 2018.
Dr. Brian McNeil and Mike Haynes
Highlights from Season 9:
Men’s Health Month: June
June is a time of year men are encouraged to learn more about early detection for such diseases as prostate cancer. As such, the Foundation conducted a media tour with KYS Spokesperson Mike Haynes using 26 interviews to reach more than 500,000 people.
Summer Training Camps
Summertime is no time for resting for the Foundation. Our team was promoting prostate cancer awareness with the New Orleans Saints in June and the New England Patriots in August. During these two events, the web traffic for KnowYourStats.org doubled and more than 4,300 social media impressions were generated.
Pro Football Hall of Fame
August marks the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week where sports stars, fans and media outlets gather to recognize football’s greatest players, coaches and staff. During the 2017 Enshrinement Week, more than 4 million people were reached through 27 Know Your Stats radio interviews, including national outlets like CBS, NBC and SIRIUS XM radio.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September is a big month for the Foundation as we do what we can to promote prostate health to as many people as we are able. Through the combined efforts of two Foundation media tours and a tweetchat, nearly 70 million people were reached with important messages about prostate cancer.
Without John Williams, bikes don’t really fly, nor do brooms, nor do men in red capes. There is no Force. Dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe.”
Steven Spielberg
American Director, Producer and Screenwriter referring to musical movie composer, John Williams.
The Foundation is truly grateful for all the support and continued involvement we receive from our donors. In turn, we offer support opportunities to raise funds and awareness of urologic conditions. One of these fundraising events was held during the AUA Annual Meeting in May 2017 in Boston. The gala event featured An Evening with the Music of John Williams supported by AUA members, industry partners and Boston socialites. Nearly $500,000 was raised to advance urologic research.
Our donors were invited to attend this extraordinary event that celebrated the work of John Williams, the legendary composer and Grammy award winner credited with scoring such Hollywood blockbusters as Star Wars, Jaws, Superman and more. The concert featured Maestro Jonathan McPhee and the Lexington Symphony, with accompaniment by the New World Chorale. The magnitude of participation made a positive impact on the Boston community helping to raise substantial support to advance urologic research and education, including urologic cancers globally.
The foundation pledges to invest in urologic health with world-renowned research and educational programs.
I believe that the investment in human capital - in terms of [the Urology Care Foundation] research training - is the best investment.”

Financial Highlights of 2017* may be summarized by the Urology Care Foundation’s two major categories:
Research Grants
Our funding opportunities have a global reach and support the spectrum of the research career, including medical students, residents, postdoctoral fellows and independent investigators. International researchers are eligible for awards sponsored by the Indian American Urological Association and the Endourological Society.
Grants are administered by the American Urological Association and are awarded to institutions and individuals through the Urology Care Foundation. The AUA has a stringent peer-review process that reflects the highest standards of the National Institutes of Health. Each year, the Foundation grants nearly $2 million in research funding to support training awards, salary stipends and fellowships to promising young investigators.
Education and Outreach
Awareness is raised for urologic health through national public health campaigns and publications. The Foundation’s online and print materials are based on information from the AUA’s Clinical Guidelines. Our patient-friendly educational tools are designed to promote communication between patients and their healthcare providers. We also publish UrologyHealth extra®, a quarterly, award-winning patient focused magazine.

Some Give to Help Patients and Advance Urology
Mid-Atlantic Section Representative and AUA Board Director, Roger E. Schultz. MD, FACS, is proud to donate to the Urology Care Foundation. When asked why donations to the Foundation are important, he says that “the Foundation provides all the educational resources I need to teach my patients what they need to know about their urologic conditions. Donations are also important toward advancing the cures of tomorrow…providing us with scientists and the clinicians that help support urology.”
Others Give in Memory of Loved Ones
Many times our heartfelt pain can lead us toward the desire to help others. Kalish Kedia, MD of Cleveland Urology Associates recalls one of his most memorable Urology Care Foundations donations as one donated in loving memory of his late son. As a father, he says that “the most important values that I’ve taught my children are a need to have respect for other people and the environment around you, and to give back to others.” Dr. Kedia’s gift will ensure funds are generated to support the discovery and advancement of urologic research for future generations.
When you donate to the Urology Care Foundation, your gifts fund answers and education that offer a better future for people fighting urologic diseases.
Because of the generosity of our donors, the Urology Care Foundation is able to truly make a difference in the lives of people affected by urologic disease. You too can make a difference in the lives of those suffering from urologic conditions. Every donation matters and your contribution can change lives for the better.
The Urology Care Foundation offers a wide range of gifting options through which individuals, corporations and foundations can help support the Foundation. Here are a few of our most popular giving arrangements:

Our award-winning urology magazine, UrologyHealth extra®, is another dynamic way to reach patients and caregivers in a more relatable manner. This magazine has been intentionally designed to empower patients with reliable, current and easy-to-read information to guide them along their healthcare journey. Developed as a physician-led education tool, this magazine becomes more personal with a questions and answers section, recipes and stunning visual imagery—perfect for any doctor’s office or coffee table.
UrologyHealth extra® is a free publication which is released quarterly and is available in both print and digital formats. In 2017, we expanded the reach of this award-winning patient magazine by 27%.
