Urology Care Foundation at the 2018 AUA Annual Meeting

The 2018 American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Meeting ended earlier this week in San Francisco. The Urology Care Foundation played a key role as part of this meeting where leaders came together to carve new paths in advancing research and education to improve urologic patients' lives.

This year's Foundation booth was located inside the meeting's main hub in an area nicknamed "The Square." It drew traffic from thousands of meeting attendees who passed by daily to interact with our staff and engage with our library of patient education resources.

The 5th Annual Patient Advocacy Hub was adjacent to the Foundation's main booth. Our relationship with patient advocates blossoms every spring at this meeting as we host dozens of patient advocacy organizations as part of our overall booth space.

In addition to connecting with meeting attendees, patient advocates gained an opportunity to meet face-to-face with key leaders in urology. This year's patient advocates hosted talks about how they're working to enhance the lives of people living with urologic conditions. Read the entire agenda of our 2018 patient advocates and the topics of their discussions.

Attendees visiting this year's Foundation booth also gained a chance to receive our new Spanish-language Prostate Health Patient Guide and the Men's Urology Health Poster. The brand new Summer 2018 UrologyHealth extra® magazine was also available for attendees to pick up.

Away from the Foundation booth, other key educational highlights and research presented to benefit urology patients included:

Studies Presented Show Men with Poor Sleep Habits Face a Multitude of Increased Health Risks

Research presented at the meeting connected poor sleep quality and nocturia with erectile dysfunction, low testosterone and an increased risk of death. Nocturia and poor sleep quality have been linked to such daytime problems as difficulty concentrating, a general lack of energy and irritability or impulsive behaviors, and three new studies presented at the meeting showed poor sleep quality can lead to additional serious health risks.

Women's Health and Urinary Functions

A women's health panel discussed the impact of women's health and fitness behaviors on urinary functions. Two studies examining the impact a therapeutic yoga program and proper toileting behaviors have on a woman's urinary function were presented at the meeting.

New studies show promise in understanding more about Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects 30 million men in the United States. Three new studies evaluating the prevalence of ED in certain populations, as well as ED treatments and their availability to patients, were being presented at the meeting.
