Prostate cancer is called advanced when it spreads beyond the prostate or returns after treatment. There are four stages of prostate cancer, with the last two stages as more advanced. Stage III is “locally advanced” where cancer has spread outside the prostate but only to nearby tissues. Stage IV is “advanced” where cancer has spread outside the prostate to other parts of the body.
There are many types of advanced prostate cancer based on where the cancer has spread and how it responds to treatment. While there is no cure for advanced prostate cancer, treatment can help slow down the growth and spread of cancer.
Just like with early-stage prostate cancer, there are many signs and risks to look out for with advanced prostate cancer. Your risks increase if you are age 65 or older, have a family history of prostate cancer, are African American or have certain gene mutations. It is a good idea to talk to your doctor about your risks for this type of cancer if you fall into any of these groups.
Even with advanced prostate cancer, there may not be any signs or symptoms present. Symptoms will depend on the size of the growth and where the cancer has spread in the body. With advanced disease, mainly if you have not had treatment to the prostate itself, you may have trouble passing urine or see blood in your urine. Some men may feel tired, weak or lose weight. When prostate cancer spreads to bones, you may have bone pain. Tell your doctor about any pain or symptoms you have as there are treatments that may help.
