October is Emotional Wellness Month, a time to reflect on how we handle emotions as they relate to the life events we experience. Emotional Wellness is defined by The National Center for Emotional Wellness as “an awareness, understanding and acceptance of our feelings, and our ability to manage effectively through challenges and change.”
Emotional wellness can affect your life in many ways such as relationships, work and overall mental health. We all go through hard times in our life, which can cause many levels of stress. When it comes to your overall health, it is of great value to think about not just your physical health, but also your mental health. Mental and emotional stress can show up in our lives as physical pain, a weak immune system and unhealthy habits, just to name a few.
So how can we take control of our emotions and keep balance in our lives? The short answer, self-care. Self-care is a term used quite a bit in today’s world but with all that goes on in our lives (work, family, activities, etc.), how do people find time for themselves? This requires a mindset shift to learn that self-care isn’t selfish. It is a way to make time for yourself so you can show up better in your own life and have better relationships with others around you.
Here are some things you can do to help balance your emotions:
- Practice mindfulness. This can be done through meditation and staying in the present moment.
- Recognize your emotions. It is okay to feel stressed. By learning how you react to certain life events, you may better learn how to cope with those emotions.
- Workout regularly. By taking care of your physical health, you may feel better mentally and emotionally.
- Find a support community. This can be especially helpful if you have health issues like a urologic condition or disease.
It is of great value to know that you are not alone. There are many other people who have stress in their lives and have to work through hard times. The Urology Care Foundation shares survivor stories to help people with urologic conditions and diseases feel less alone and know there are other people who have gone through or are going through the same thing.
Check out these survivor stories and remember you are not alone, you are of value and by putting a focus on self-care, you can become a better version of you.
