Every four years people from all over the world come together to display their extreme talent at the Winter Olympics. These athletes have been working toward this goal of being at the Olympics for years and sometimes even their entire lives. While being active is of great value to living a healthy life, being part of a sport can put you at higher risk for injury.
The athletes that compete in these games are so well trained to the point of knowing how to fall to prevent major injury. However, not all things can be planned and accidents do happen. So what is the link between the Winter Olympics and urology, you ask?
Well, any major injury can put your internal organs at risk and for urology that includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, testis and external genitalia. Accidents such as falls or collisions can lead to these types of injuries. Olympic athletes compete at such a high level. The stakes are higher, the drive to win is higher and the risk of injury is higher.
It is of great value to be aware of how these urologic injuries can occur, what the risks are in sports at any level and how to prevent them. Make sure to wear all the appropriate protective gear when you practice or compete in sports. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about the risk of injury for your sport.
Remember, Olympic athletes may seem invincible to us but these urologic injuries can happen to anyone. It is key to be prepared to help prevent injury.
Reach for gold in your life by staying healthy and safe.
