So your doctor said you should see a urologist to help treat a certain problem. But what even is urology and why would you need to go see one for treatment?
In simple terms, urology is a part of health care that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, prostate or male reproductive organs).
Urologists help patients with health issues like:
- Pain when passing urine (peeing), like a urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Problems with urine leaks, like with incontinence
- Bladder issues, like overactive bladder (OAB)
- Kidney stones
- Problems with urine flow
- Problems getting pregnant (male infertility)
- Problems with genitals (male or female sex organs)
- Enlarged prostate or prostatitis
- Cancers in the kidneys, bladder, testicles, penis or prostate
- Male hormone problems, like low testosterone
- Urinary and genital conditions in children
- Pelvic floor disorders like pelvic pain, overactive bladder (OAB), incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse (POP)
Both men and women are often embarrassed about having to see a urologist for problems like those listed above, but, being proactive when it comes to urologic health can help lower the risk for many urologic conditions.
If you have suffered from health issues for many years, and your doctor suggests you see a urologist, it may bring great relief to make an appointment and talk about possible treatment options. Having good urologic health is of great value as it covers so many of our body’s functions.
