National Cancer Prevention Month - Knowledge is Power

Posted on: 23 Feb 2024

Family smiling together.

February is National Cancer Prevention Month, and the first part of prevention is knowledge. Below are the six main urologic cancers and where to learn more:

Bladder Cancer is the second most common type of urologic cancer. Risk factors include smoking, workplace chemicals, certain cancer drugs or types of radiation, family history and diet. To learn more, download this Bladder Cancer Prevention Fact Sheet.

Kidney Cancer is among one of the 10 most common cancers in both men and women. Risk factors include smoking, poor diet, family history of high blood pressure, workplace chemicals or genetics. To learn more, download this Kidney Cancer Patient Guide.

Penile Cancer is rare. Penile tumors are thought to be caused by bodily fluids that get trapped in the foreskin that aren’t washed away on a routine basis. Also, older men, smokers, or men with AIDS are more likely to get penile cancer. To learn more, read this Penile Cancer Web Article.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but age, ethnicity, family history, and weight can raise a man’s risk for the disease. To learn more, download this Navigating Prostate Cancer Patient Magazine.

Testicular Cancer is not common. It is not known what causes testicular cancer, but men with a family history, undescended testicles, or with germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS) have a higher risk of having this type of cancer. To learn more, download this Testicular Cancer Patient Guide.

Urethral Cancer can occur in both men and women and is very rare, but the exact cause is not known. To learn more, read this Urethral Cancer Web Article.
